Hwang comes from a South Korean origin; as a result, her ethnicity is Asian.
She was born Sunny Hai Hwang in 1976. Now a resident of Brooklyn, New York, Hwang is 48 years old.
Raised by her Asian parents, Hwang earned a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Columbia University in 1998. She then obtained a Ph.D. in Earth and Environmental Sciences from Columbia University in 2006.

Hwang has made a compelling professional career as an experienced editor and writer with an academic research background. Since June 2022, she has been serving as a senior developmental editor at W. W. Norton & Company, Inc.
Before starting her senior position in the company, Hwang worked as a developmental editor from April 2014 to June 2022. She has also been a course scientist at the American Museum of Natural History since 2001.
Hwang enjoyed freelancing as a medical, science, and math writer/editor from August 2011 to April 2014. Prior to that, she was a math and science editor at Kaplan from July 2010 to August 2011.
Additionally, Hwang served as an assistant professor at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine at New York Institute of Technology from 2006 to 2010. From 2000 to 2004, she was a freelance science writer/expert reviewer at The Princeton Review.
While at Columbia University, Hwang also handled roles of laboratory technician and associate instructor.
