Anise K. Strong-Morse is a history professor from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Moreover, she is popular as a contestant in the 41st season of America’s longest-running quiz game show, Jeopardy!

There will be clues that I miss – including some I buzzed in on – that I’m sure you know the answer to, and can’t believe I missed. There will be clues that I answered correctly that you would have never gotten. This is the Way. Five seconds is a really short time, especially when you are balancing on a tall box under bright lights with Ken Jennings staring at you. I will appreciate it if any comments tomorrow are not chastising or mocking.
That said, while I’ll have a lot more to say post-episode, of course, but one thing I wanted to note beforehand is that one of the unexpected gifts of Jeopardy! was a chance to learn or relearn useful facts that my education had missed. Chief among these was Canadian geography; as I’m sure my expat friend David Swain can mournfully tell you, in San Diego public schools we learn virtually nothing about Canada (and not much more about Mexico!). I can name all the Canadian provinces now and describe some useful things about them!
In general, my geography knowledge has suffered from learning geography in high school in the year 1991 – there are a lot of new nations! Having the chance to focus on some of the remarkable corners of the world and their beauties was a treat. I also know a lot more now about baseball and basketball than I used to which will help me in future social settings, and I can talk at least briefly about President Chester A. Arthur.
One of the main reasons I love Jeopardy! is because I love learning new things. I’ll forever be grateful that the show gave me an excuse to explore new knowledge outside my own comfort zone for a few months.
As a contestant on Tuesday, Anise will be up against the returning two-day champion, Mike Dawson. The technology manager from Portland, Oregon, has a winning purse of $35,600 which he accumulated from two straight wins.
