Saigo is the first Japanese winner in the event and the fifth major champion on the LPGA Tour. She began playing on the LPGA Tour in 2024 and was named Louise Suggs Rolex Rookie of the Year in her debut season.

In 2020, she turned professional and went on to join the JLPGA Tour. The next year, she was runner-up seven times to finish 4th on the 2020–21 money list.

Furthermore, she recorded three wins and two second-place finishes in the first six tournaments in the 2022 season. She had her best result, finishing T3 at the 2022 Evian Championship. 

Mao had a remarkable amateur career, winning the Japan Women’s Amateur Championship in 2019. She now ranks world no. 37 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings and has a best rank of no. 33.

Born on  8 October 2001, Saigo is 23 years old now. She is originally from Funabashi in Greater Tokyo, Japan.

Standing at a height of 5 feet 3 inches, she began playing golf when she was five years old. She used to practice at Chatanzu Golf Garden in Chiba City, Chiba Prefecture.

Earlier, Saigo attended Funabashi Municipal Miyama Elementary School. Later, she pursued her high school education at Reizei High School in Chiba. She is now studying at the Japan Wellness Sports University and is affiliated with Daito Trust Construction.
