Cliff enrolled at East Carolina University to play for the Pirates in 1998. Over the four years, he started 126 games and served three years as a team co-captain.

Cliff later decided to switch his career as a coach in 2003. Initially, he served as an assistant coach at Kinston High School. Later, he continued his assistant coaching career at UNC Wilmington, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame, LSU, UCF, and Ole Miss.

Subsequently, on 25 June 2014, Cliff took his role as the head coach of the East Carolina University. Since, he records several accomplishments and honors, including 2x American Tournament (2015, 2018) and 2x American Regular Season (2019, 2021).
