Ellen Janeway Klages was born in 1954 in Columbus, Ohio, United States. She has now lived in San Francisco, California for more than five decades. She is 69 years of age and her birthday falls on the 9th of July every year.
Klages completed her high school education at Bexley High School in 1972. Eventually, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy at the University of Michigan in 1976.

Ellen was raised by her parents, John W. Klages and Virginia Booze Klages. Her parents married on Valentine’s Day in 1948.

Klages’ 2005 novelette Basement Magic won the Nebula Award in 2005. On top of that, her 2017 novelette, Passing Strange won the British Fantasy Award, the World Fantasy Award, and the Gaylactic Spectrum Award.
Apart from writing, Ellen is also a graduate of the Second City Conservatory, the Clarion South Workshop. She has served for two decades on the Motherboard of the James Tiptree, Jr. Literary Award.
