Following Sam’s sacking, Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) that Sam would be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. He said,

We look forward to getting to know Emmett Shear and OAI’s new leadership team and working with them. Prior to taking the new position, Emmett was the Chief Executive Officer of Twitch.
