Collegiately, he played at Saint Mary’s College of California for three years. There, he was selected as an All-WCC Singles Honorable Mention as a freshman.

James has a career-high ITF Junior Ranking of no.1259, achieved on 23 January 2017. He reached the semifinal of the singles events at the ITF Waikato-Bays Under 18s Championships.
