In the guise of “getting a photographer to take 50th birthday photos,” I was coordinating a surprise proposal on the grounds of the center.
Our love is the kind of deep-conversation-punctuated-by-ridiculous-amounts-of-laughter-while-working-to-improve-a-burning-world that sapphic couples everywhere will recognize. As I said in my proposal, Kim has always felt like home. Her warmth and smile. Her laughter and care. Doing the past 6 years with her has been a joy. Doing the rest will be a great adventure.
Marriage has been a complicated concept for me. Growing up a queer kid in the 90s, I told myself I’d die alone, “but I’m good with it”. In college, I spent hours in the LGBT section of Powell’s Books, or the foreign films section of Blockbuster Video, searching for evidence of “normal” queer life.
While the concept of marriage is complicated for me. The desire to spend my life with someone who sees and loves me is remarkably uncomplicated.
Initially, it was Kim who hard-launched their relationship on social media on National Coming Out Day in October 2020. The announcement came on 10th October.
Through her post, Kim mentioned that she met Flickinger in 2019 in New York. At that time, they found out that they lived less than 10 minutes from each other in Los Angeles.
