Being a first-generation Indian American portraying the Broadway character of Aladdin, Michael always feels that representation matters. Talking about this in an interview in 2022, Michael said,
I think you hear the phrase so much now that it’s just sort of started to feel like a buzzword, but for me it is so much more than that. It’s about having the visibility in spaces that people who are underrepresented can look to for inspiration, for motivation, and to feel seen. But beyond that, almost more importantly for me, it’s about identifying and putting on display the full humanity of underrepresented folks, so that people who may come from communities that are pretty homogenous can identify people that don’t look like them and know that there is so much in common with these people.
While growing up, acting was never Michael’s first choice. Initially, he was passionate about music and he liked playing piano.
Michael even received his earliest vocal training as a treble in the American Boychoir. He was then praised by the Baltimore Sun for his smooth singing as De Brétigny in Massenet’s Manon with the Peabody Opera Theatre.
As of now, Michael is gaining recognition for his refined singing in musical theatre, art songs, and repertoire spanning opera.
