Reid Kristien Detmers was born on July 8, 1999, in Springfield, Illinois, United States. He is one of the three children of Kris Detmers and Erica Detmers. He grew up in Nokomis, Illinois with two brothers named Drew and Parker Detmers.

Detmers attended Nokomis High School and then transferred to Glenwood High School after three years. In 2018, he committed to the University of Louisville to play college basketball.

Reid was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 32nd round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft however, he did not sign a contract to attend Louisville. He played for the Louisville Cardinals for three seasons from 2018 to 2020.
Detmers broke a school record with 167 strikeouts as a sophomore and tied the program’s record with 13 wins while leading the Cardinals to the 2019 College World Series. He was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year, first-team All-ACC, a first-team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
