Rick Hoyt Dies At Age 61; Learn About His Wiki and Father

Rick Hoyt was an iconic racer who formerly competed on Boston Marathons and other races alongside his late father, Dick Hoyt. Sadly, he passed away on 22 May 2023 at the age of 61.

Rick died due to complications with his respiratory system. His family released a statement on The Hoyt Foundation’s Facebook page where they revealed Rick’s sad passing. The statement read,

It is with profound sadness that the Hoyt Family announces the passing of our beloved brother and uncle, Rick Hoyt this morning. As so many knew, Rick along with our father, Dick, were icons in the road race and triathlon worlds for over 40 years and inspired millions of people with disabilities to believe in themselves, set goals and accomplish extraordinary things.

Rick and his father, Dick competed in various athletic competitions together under their team name, Team Hoyt. The father-son pair was inducted into the Ironman Hall of Fame in 2008.

Similarly, Rick and his father were honored with a bronze statue near the start of the Boston Marathon on 8 April 2013. They were also featured on inspirational billboards within the United States.

Talking about his family, Rick was born to his parents, Dick Hoyt and Judith Hoyt. His father, Dick ran marathons alongside him with the name, Team Hoyt. Sadly, Dick passed away on 17 March 2021.

Rick’s mother, Judith was a longtime advocate for children with disabilities. Sadly, she also passed away in 2010.

Rick grew up alongside his two sibling brothers. His brothers are named Russ Hoyt and Rob Hoyt.

When Rick was born, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. As a result, his brain was unable to control his muscles properly. Eventually, at the age of 11, he was fitted with a computer that enabled him to communicate using a communication device.

Talking about his education, Rick was educated at Boston University. He earned a degree in special education in 1993. Eventually, Rick worked at Boston College in a computer lab.

With American nationality, Rick had white ethnicity.

Rick’s father, Dick Hoyt ran marathons with his son. He was born Richard Eugene Hoyt Sr. on 1 June 1940 in Winchester, Massachusetts.

Sadly, Dick passed away on 17 March 2021 at the age of 80. He died in his sleep at his home in Holland, Massachusetts after experiencing some health problems.

Dick was known for competing in various athletic competitions together with his son, Rick. The father-son pair competed in numerous marathons, including over 30 editions of the Boston Marathon and Ironman Triathlons.

Since Rick had cerebral palsy, Dick pulled Rick in a special boat, carried him in a special seat in the front of a bicycle, and pushed him in a special wheelchair as throughout the competition. The father-son pair were recipients of ESPN’s Jimmy V Award for their outstanding efforts.

Before starting his athletic career, Dick was a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard.
