Diana Moreno is a candidate for Assembly District 36, a position made vacant by the new Mayor-elect of New York, Zohran Mamdani.
As a longtime friend, Mamdani has showered his support for the Democratic Socialists of America-endorsed candidate from Athens Square Park in Astoria on Saturday, 20 December 2025. He is now preparing to leave the local office in Queens and ascend to City Hall as mayor.

Speaking in public, Mamdani said,
I’m proud to endorse Diana, frankly, because she has shown, time and again, an ability to fight for the people, not just in this district but for people across New York City.
Moreno, who is eyeing to claim Mamdani’s Queens assembly seat, vows to put children first with an aim to fight for free universal child care.
Initially, Moreno and Mamdani met through the DSA. They soon began their friendship when Mamdani first ran for the Assembly in 2020.

Moreno is 37 years old. She was born in 1988 in Ecuador.
Moreno’s parents immigrated from Ecuador to the United States in 1999, when she was just 11 years old. The family then resided in Lakeland, Florida.
Reportedly, Moreno’s mother was a high school social studies teacher in Ecuador. Similarly, her father had an office job at a private telephone company.
After immigrating to the United States, Moreno’s dad did landscaping and washed dishes for a living. Moreover, her mother did housekeeping for a hotel and later ended up working for a wealthy person as a cleaning lady.
Moreno has a strong proficiency in English, French, and Spanish languages. She has a Latin American ethnicity.

Moreno initially completed her Associate of Arts in Political Science from Santa Fe College in 2008. She then obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science as well as Latin American Studies from the University of Florida in 2011.

Moreno worked as a communications manager at the New York State Nurses Association from January 2023 to October 2025. She formerly handled different positions at New Immigrant Community Empowerment (NICE) for 3 years and 6 months.
Moreover, Moreno was also actively involved at the University of Florida for 5 years. From August 2010 to January 2017, she was a group fitness instructor at Alter Ego Fitness.
On top of that, Moreno was a workplace justice organizing intern at Make the Road NY from June 2015 to August 2015. Similarly, Moreno also worked as a labor organizer at the United Faculty of Florida from September 2011 to March 2013.
In addition to that, Moreno was a writer, photographer, and illustrator at The Fine Print from June 2010 to December 2011. She was also a coordinator at the Alachua County Labor Party from May 2012 to January 2013.
