Internationally, he represents Italy national football team playing for the under-19 team. Moreover, he has played for the under-17 and under-18 levels.

Leoni is on the verge of completing his transfer to the Premier League club Liverpool in this summer’s transfer window. The deal is expected to be in the region of €35 million (£30m/$41m).

Giovanni came to Parma from another Italian side Sampdoria on 27 August 2024. He had a brief loan stint there before joining the Serie B team on a permanent transfer on 25 June 2024.

Leoni was born to Italian parents on 21 December 2006. His father Emanuele Leoni is a banker and his mother Michela Leoni works as a physiotherapist.

The player grew up in a large, sporty family as both of his parents played water polo. He is the second of five children and has four brothers named Mahamadou Diarra, Edoardo,  Filippo and Matilde Leoni. 

Mahmadou is his adoptive brother who is originally from Mali. He plays basketball  as a power forward in Serie A for Dolomiti Energia Trentino. 


Moreover, Edoardo plays water polo in Serie A2 and  two younger brothers, Filippo and Matilde, are promising padel players and tennis players,

Growing up in Rome, Giovanni also played water polo and later began playing football. He was five years old when he moved to Padua because of his parents’ jobs. There, he graduated from the Gymnasium Patavinum sports science high school.

Leoni  will earn a gross salary of €2,240,000 for his contract which expires on 30 June 2029.
