Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke is a young New Zealand politician who represents Te Pati Maori as a Member of Parliament since the 2023 New Zealand general election. She took the position back on 14 October 2023.

As Maipi-Clarke unseated incumbent Labour MP Nanaia Mahura by a margin of 2,911 votes in the 2023 election, she became the youngest Member of Parliament in New Zealand in 170 years.

Maipi-Clarke is the youngest MP in the country since James Stuart-Wortley. James was elected in the 1853 election when he was aged 20 years and 7 months.

Now, Maipi-Clarke is making the media headlines after her first speech as the MP of New Zealand. In her inaugural speech, she included a powerful performance of the Maori Haka, showcasing her deep connection to her indigenous roots.

In her speech, Maipi-Clarke said,

How can I not take anything personally when it feels like these policies were made about me? To Hauraki-Waikato, I am at your service in and outside of Parliament. I will die for you in these chambers, but I will live for you outside these four walls.

The Maori Haka which Maipi-Clarke performed is a traditional war dance of the Maori people in New Zealand. The dance involves vigorous movements, rhythmic chanting, stomping, and facial expressions to intimidate opponents.
