Jia Cobb is an American attorney. She has been serving as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.
Cobb made the headlines after she made a bold order to block President Donald Trump’s decision to expand fast-track deportations. The decision came by Friday evening on 29 August 2025.
Cobb halted the process, stating that the decision violates the constitutional due process rights of migrants. She joined hands with an immigrant rights group to stop two policies that Trump’s administration adopted in January 2015.
Taking into account the Fifth Amendment, Cobb stated,
When it exponentially expanded the population subject to expedited removal, the Government did not, however, in any way adapt its procedures to this new group of people. But when it comes to people living in the interior of the country, prioritizing speed over all else will inevitably lead the Government to erroneously remove people via this truncated process.
Following the decision, the Trump Administration asked Cobb to pause her ruling so that it could prepare an appeal. However, Cobb declined the request.
