Laine first auditioned for the 16th season of American Idol in March 2018. However, he did not go far and eliminated after being in the top 50 list. In the same year, he released a three-song EP, In the Bayou.
In the 17th season of the show, Hardy accompanied his friend Ashton Gill to play guitar at her audition. After the encouragement by judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie, he decided to audition again. He won the competition, where Alejandro Aranda became runner up and Madison VanDenburg became the second runner up. After winning the show, his coronation song “Flame” was released on May 19, 2019. He made a 13-date tour across the US from November 14 through December 7, 2019. In April 2020, he released two new songs, “Ground I Grew Up On” and “Let There Be Country.”
