It can be hard knowing who to trust these days. A people finder can help you locate someone that you’d like to get in touch with while conducting a people lookup can provide more information about that person.
It takes patience and persistence, but we’ll show you how to conduct a people lookup and public records search online that provides accurate and current information. You may need to conduct a number of searches backed up by multiple sources to get it right.
Finding Addresses
There are several free sites you can use to find addresses, but these are rarely accurate. Many operate on freemium bases, which means you will end up paying a fee for the information after a while. You may want to turn to public records instead. While rental addresses won’t be available, property ownership documents will be. (We’ll get to that later).
Criminal Records as a People Finder
You can make a Freedom of Information Act request for documents if you need information about criminal records. If the person you are looking for is currently incarcerated, you can use the Inmate Locator or Jail & Inmate records search via Corrections.com or DMV.org. Some states do not make this information searchable.
Asset Locators
Some legal proceedings, notably bankruptcy and divorce proceedings, require that parties disclose their assets. Some corporations disclose their assets on balance sheets. You can access bankruptcy records via the Federal court and divorce recordings from the courthouse where the event happened. If the person holds intellectual property, you can search for it via your local library.

Active-Duty Military Status
The active-duty military status of an individual requires an official records request. If someone is actively serving, it could explain why they aren’t communicative, so it’s good to rule this out during your people search.
Social Media Searches
While the information the government keeps and makes public is tightly controlled, we mustn’t forget about the information that individuals willingly make available through Facebook, Instagram, and other channels. You can search for people by name or alias, or ask neighborhood groups for information about their whereabouts. If their profile is public, you may be able to find out where they work, live, and even a phone number. LinkedIn is a great place to find out where someone has worked in the past.
Property Records
All deeds and property titles are filed with the Tax Assessor or County Recorder. While not all offices make this information public, you can visit the county office and speak to the clerk about obtaining these records. You can use these records to find out whether or not someone is a landowner, verify their addresses, or determine the value of the property they are currently holding. You’ll be able to verify the fair market value of their property through commercial real estate sites.
Obituaries
If you aren’t sure whether the person you are looking for is living or deceased, try looking up newspaper or funeral home obituaries around the area of their last known address. You may also find information on social media or on the Department of Health website.
Births and Marriages
You can usually find birth and marriage information from official state offices, but sometimes it’s best to look up the information through simple Google searches. Even if the person doesn’t make the information available themselves, friends and family may have posted about it on social media, or the official wedding photographer may have added pictures online.
Professional Licenses
If the person works in a profession that requires a license, like a pilot, radio operator, or doctor, you can look up their information through a licensing board or any regulatory body that oversees their profession.

If you don’t want to spend your time and fuel driving around various offices and sifting through paperwork, your best bet is to find a comprehensive online lookup service.
