Following the incident, medical staff from both clubs immediately rushed to the field and provided emergency medical support. An on-site defibrillator was deployed on the pitch before emergency medical paramedics rushed in to take over the treatment.
Castro was then rushed to a local hospital via ambulance, where he was pronounced dead. Although the immediate trigger was a sudden collapse on the pitch leading to cardiorespiratory failure, the official medical autopsy report has not yet been publicly released.
The Lisbon Football Association announced Castro’s death on Saturday, writing,
