Sal started his amateur baseball career while studying at Lexington High School. There, he also played football and hockey.
In fact, Sal was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year as a senior after passing 30 touchdowns as part of the Lexington football team. Later, he joined Boston College to play college baseball.
As a freshman, Sal made it into the Second Team All-ACC and to the ACC All-Freshman Team after batting .367 with four home runs, 32 RBIs, 30 runs scored, and 18 stolen bases.

The outfielder batted .241 with 17 runs scored and seven stolen bases in 15 games before his sophomore season halted due to the coronavirus pandemic.
As a junior, Sal recorded impressive stats as he batted .359 with a .443 on-base percentage and got named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year.
