Angella Okutoyi Wiki & Family: Get To Know The Tennis Player

Angella Okutoyi is a Kenyan tennis player who has a career-high ITF Junior Ranking of no. 49, achieved on 12 September 2022. 

Moreover, she has a career-high WTA Singles Ranking of world no. 928, achieved on 14 August 2023. She has a WTA doubles ranking of no. 1036 and achieved a career-high ranking of no. 1008 on 31 July 2023.

Okutoyi won the girls’ doubles title with Dutch partner Rose Marie Nijkamp at the 2022 Wimbledon Tennis Championship. Eventually, she became the first Kenyan to reach a final and win a Grand Slam tournament.

Furthermore, she became the first Kenyan to win a match at a junior girls’ Grand Slam event at the 2022 Australian Open Junior Championships. There, she won the first round defeating Italian qualifier Federica Urgesi, and defeated Australian Zara Larke in the second round.

However, she lost to Serbian Lola Radivojevic in the third round which made her the first Kenyan in the world to progress to a third round in a major. She now plays collegiate tennis at Auburn University and is in her freshman year.

Throughout her career, she has won one singles and two doubles titles in the ITF Circuit. Her one and only ITF doubles title was in July 2023 at the W15 Monastir in Tunisia, where she defeated American Isabella Harvison in the final.

As a junior, she has won six ITF junior singles titles and 13 doubles titles. She is a two-time African junior champion and was ranked as the best junior player in the continent of Africa. Additionally, she has played for Kenya Billie Jean King Cup team with a win/loss record of 11–5.

Angella Okutoyi Wiki, Education & Height

Born on 29 January 2004, Okutoyi has reached the age of 19 now. She hails from Nairobi, Kenya.

As per wiki, she stands at a height of about 5 feet 7 inches, equivalent to 1.7 meters. Likewise, her preferred hand is right. 

Angella began to play tennis at the age of four. Later, she moved to Burundy from her home country at the age of 10 and began training at the ITF East Africa Regional Training Centre.

After two years, she again returned to Nairobi to develop her game at the ITF East Africa High Performance Centre in Nairobi. She also attended Mbagathi Primary School and then Loreto Convent Valley Road School in her hometown and played tennis there,

Okutoyi was born to Kenyan parents at Pumwani Maternity Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya. She has a twin sister named Roselida Asumwa. She has purely African roots from her family’s side.

The player has a tragic childhood as her mother Angela died after giving birth to them in 2004. Afterward, the newborn babies were cared for by the Catholic Sisters of Loreto Convent Msongari and were to be placed in an orphanage.

Later, their grandmother Mary Ndonda took them to a small single servant quarter house in Loreto Convent. The duo was again taken to an orphanage home in Limuru where they spent their childhood.

Angella recalls her childhood stating that she grew up poor in her grandmother’s house. They had only one meal a day and they just had water for supper.

Angella Okutoyi’s Sister Is Also A Tennis Player

Okutoyi’s twin sister Roselinda is a rising tennis sensation. She has been playing ITF fixtures and local tournaments. 

The duo competed in the Rwanda Open 2022, winning in doubles 6-1, 6-0 against Tanzanian third seeds Mao and Ester Nankulange. In the same tournament, Angela claimed her singles title beating her sister  (2-0) 6-1, 6-2.

Roselinda recently received a university scholarship to the United States of America from Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kansas starting in January 2023.
