The player joined Manchester City from Argentine club River Plate on 31 January 2022. Afterward, he remained at River Plate on loan until July 2022.
Alvarez joined River Plate from Atlético Calchín in 2016 and later moved to its senior squad during the 2018–19 season. Eventually, he made his professional debut in a Primera División match against Aldosivi on 27 October 2018.
Internationally, he has played with the Argentina U20s and U23s teams. Likewise, he made his senior team debut in a World Cup qualifier against Chile on 3 June 2021. He plays forward as a striker but he can also operate as a winger.
